Claude API (Anthropic) ↔ Zapier integration

Your Claude agent becomes a private app in your Zapier: zaps hand it text to read and sort, and its structured answer drives the next steps

Zapier already connects the apps a team uses, but a zap cannot understand text: it cannot tell a complaint from an order or pull an amount out of a letter. Teams end up with filters that break on the first unusual wording. The Claude ↔ Zapier pair adds that understanding as a separate step: we publish your AI agent as a private integration in your Zapier account, a zap passes it the text, and the agent returns fixed fields, such as type, urgency, amount or a draft reply, that the following steps use. Your existing zaps keep working; the agent is one more step in them. Below: what moves, which scenarios we cover and what we rely on in both systems.

What moves between the systems

  • Zapier → Claude API (Anthropic)In any zap an action step «ask the agent» passes it the text from the previous steps: a form answer, a letter, a chat message, a review.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → ZapierThe agent returns the agreed fields, such as type, urgency, client name, amount and a short summary, and the next steps of the zap filter and route by them.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → ZapierFor long documents, such as PDF contracts or price lists, the agent reads the file itself and returns the same fields plus a note on what it found.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) → ZapierWork the agent does on its own schedule, for example a morning digest of yesterday's requests, reaches Zapier as an event that starts your zap.

What we connect

  • We build the agent's app on the Zapier Platform and share it privately with your account; it does not appear in the public Zapier directory.
  • Together with you we write the list of fields and allowed values for each zap, for example the three request types your sales team really uses.
  • The Claude usage runs on your own Anthropic account and is billed to you; the Zapier tasks count against your Zapier plan as usual.
  • We add the agent step to one existing zap first, compare its answers with what your team decided for a week, and only then add it to the other zaps.

Automation scenarios

01

Form answers routed by keywords

Before a zap sends a form answer to sales if it contains «price», and misses every request written differently.

After the agent reads the answer and returns the type, and the zap routes by it.

02

Reviews read by nobody

Before reviews go into a sheet and are read once a month.

After the agent marks each review as positive, neutral or a complaint with a short reason, and complaints go to the manager's chat the same hour.

03

Invoices arrive as PDF

Before the accountant opens each attached invoice and types the amount and due date.

After the agent reads the PDF and returns the supplier, amount and date, and the zap adds a row for the accountant to confirm.

How it works technically

For those who want to check: each point links to the official documentation page it comes from.

  • Zapier Platform lets you build your own integration: the Platform UI in the browser without code using API endpoint URLs, or the CLI in a local environment with version control and command-line releases.

  • In a custom integration, a polling trigger periodically checks the given API endpoint for new or updated data, while a REST Hook trigger requires the app to support webhook subscriptions.

  • A task is counted each time an action step runs successfully; trigger, filter and certain built-in steps do not count. Each plan includes a monthly task allowance, and when it is reached, runs are held, not lost, and can be replayed later.

  • Tool use: Claude decides when to call a function described by the client based on the request and the function's description, and returns a structured call that the client's application executes.

  • Claude answers questions about any text, pictures, charts and tables in the PDF documents you provide; all active models support PDF processing.

  • By default Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs from its commercial products, including the platform connection, to train its models, unless the account owner explicitly allows it.

Limits

The limits come from both systems. The model can be wrong, so its fields are used for sorting and drafts, and anything that reaches a client or moves money waits for a person. Every successful agent step is counted as a Zapier task on your plan; when the monthly volume runs out, runs are delayed rather than lost. A zap waits for the agent's answer for a limited time, so very long documents are handled by the agent on its side and returned as a separate event instead of inside one step.

How to start

Three steps from a first message to work on your project.

  1. 01

    Leave a request

Describe the task in the form — in text or by voice. Budget and timing are optional.

  2. 02

    We review and estimate

A developer studies the brief, asks about anything unclear and sends an estimate.

  3. 03

    We start

Once scope and price are agreed, the work begins.

Questions

Do we have to rebuild our zaps?
No. The agent is added as one more step in the zaps where text has to be understood; everything else in the zap stays as it is.
Will our data be used to train Claude?
By default, no: Anthropic states that inputs and outputs of its commercial products are not used to train its models. The agent receives only the fields the zap passes to it.
Why not the ready-made AI step inside Zapier?
For a one-off prompt it may be enough. The pair is for cases where the agent must follow your rules and lists, read your documents and answer the same way every time, and where those rules are kept and tested in one place.
